A spiral wooden staircase wrapped around a large artificial tree leads to second-floor tables with views of the open kitchen. There’s enough space for privacy, and service is excellent. House specialties include the gelatinous green turtle stewed with taro (yuer shao jiayu) — a regional delicacy, but not to everyone’s taste. More reliable would be huiguo houpi cai (twice-cooked thick-skinned greens), a leafy green vegetable boiled and stir-fried in a delicious broad bean sauce, and more inspired than its name suggests. Also try yecai ba (steamed glutinous rice bread with wild vegetable wrapped in corn husks), and doufu jiyu (tofu and golden carp). The tasty sauce, made of tomato, spring onion, chilies, and beans, makes this a particular favorite with locals.

Tandoor Indian Cuisine Restaurants
Tandoor’s Indian chef clearly takes care in buying and preparing ingredients to make authentic dishes from chiefly the north, but also from southern India. The food and service are equally superb. A delicious specialty from Goa is the Portuguese-influenced pork vindaloo. This very hot dish is made with Indian spices, vinegar, and chilies. One of the best northern specialties is murgh malai kabob, chunks of chicken marinated in ginger-garlic paste, then mixed with cheese, cream, coriander, chili, cinnamon, and anisette, and cooked in a tandoori oven. Connected to the Xinzu Binguan (Sunjoy Inn), Tandoor, designed by an Indian architect, is airy and handsome; elegant wooden rafters give it flair, and soft Indian music enhances an already pleasing ambience. Traditional Indian dance performances run nightly from 7 to 8pm.

chengdu restaurant1With four outlets and a cooking school, this is one of Chengdu’s most popular restaurants. Specializing in dishes made with traditional pickled vegetables (pao cai), the restaurant has won awards for its paojiao moyu zai (pickled pepper with baby squid). Two other distinctive dishes are Caigen Xiang spareribs (Caigen Xiang paigu) which fall off the bone and are cooked in a delicious sauce that renders them juicy and tender, and fish with pickled vegetables (paocai jiayu). This is a whole fish served in a red sauce with a variety of fresh and pickled vegetables. Bones have to be dealt with, but the fish is delicate and tasty.

Nestled in next to the Anchor Bar, the food at Fiesta isn’t exactly authentic — suffering from the Sichuan tendency to make everything a little hotter than necessary — but the service and environment more than compensate. The polished wooden floor boards and elegantly dressed serving staff add a touch of class, and the high ceilings add a breezy feeling that makes the restaurant a pleasant escape from the summer heat
