After 2 weeks of fantastic Chinese food, it was still cool to find a place where I could get a greasy burger and fries with an ice-cold beer. And the onion rings were as decadent as any diner back here.

Conveniently located next to the Pearl River, 1920 is ideal for lunch after a morning browsing the markets or before an afternoon stroll around Shamian. This small cafe-style eatery has an outdoor seating area and an upstairs section with live jazz in the evening and a Sunday jazz brunch (10:30am-4pm). Although now under Filipino management, there is still a strong German influence to the menu and the place is popular with tourists and expats alike. On the way out, make sure to check just around the corner to see what Oliver Twist is eating at the bizarrely named Village of Gruel.
