Hohhot is the capital of the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, and is home to 36 different ethnic groups. Serving a
s the region’s administrative, economic, and cultural centre.
The city covers 17,224 square kilometers (6,650.19 square miles) with a population exceeding 1,400,000. , 11% of the city’s population is of Mongol origin .Of the remaining population, most are Han Chinese descendants of people originally from Shanxi, or those who have migrated from Northeastern China and Hebei after the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. There is a small minority of Korean, Hui, Manchu, Uyghur population, amongst others.
The climate of Hohhot is continental with four distinct seasons and significant temperature spreads between day and night. The average annual temperature is 6′C (42.8′F). Winter in Hohhot is cold and long with an average temperature of -10′C (14′F). Leather coats and boots are necessary.
The best time to visit Hohhot is from April to October, while the best time to go to the grassland is from middle July to early September when the temperature is 15′C(59′F) to 25′C(77′F).
History
Hohhot was founded by Altan Khan around 1580. Until 1954, Hohhot was referred to by the Chinese as Guisui , or Kweisui, which is the acronym of the two districts of the city: Guihua : Southeastern old section, business district, established as a town in the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty Suiyuan : Northeastern “New
Town”, government district. Established in the 17th century by the Manchus. The two sections later became Guihua District of the Qing Empire, renamed to Guisui County in 1913, and upgraded to a city in 1950.
Hohhot includes 4 counties, 4 districts, and a county-level banner; 20 sub-districts, and 96 townships.
Districts include:
Xincheng District , Huimin District ,Yuquan District and Saihan District .
Counties include:
Tokto County ,Tolmud Left Banner ,Wuchuan County ,Holingol County and Qingshuihe County .
