The best area in Kashgar to do your shopping is around the streets near Id Kah Square. Good quality carpets can be found in the shops on the streets heading north from the square. A complete array of rough-hewn carpets with simple designs reflecting the culture of the nomads around the area can be found at prices about one third of those in Turkey.

Xinjiang hats are popular souvenirs and an basic part of the daily life of the people there. The streets east of the square have a good selection of all colors and patterns. Prayer hats, skull hats, and furry winter hats favored by old Uigur men can be found there.

At the main bazaar, blacksmiths and carpenters can be seen hard at work in front of their workshops and stalls. Knives with handles inlaid with jewels and ivory, chests decorated with tin, and numerous musical instruments can all be purchased there.

North of the square is a cloth market and to the south is a night market. There is also a Sunday market on the eastern edge of the city, with an exotic middle eastern atmosphere. Hundreds of carts pulled by animals pour into the large concrete structure that houses many stalls. Visitors are strongly advised to be wary of pickpockets.

Interesting local items include musical instruments, knives, Uigur caps, earthenware, carpets, jewelry, dyed cloth, and Xinjiang silk.

Sunday Bazaars
The Mal Bazaar is a livestock market where locals from surrounding villages come to buy and sell animals. It’s held on an open (but fenced) ground. Popular with tourists, the market is so big it feels like a working bazaar. Take bus 16 from the peoples square to get there for CNY 1.
At the Yengi Bazaar you’ll find handicrafts, textiles, carpets, and and a wide variety of other interesting things. This market is open daily and is less crowded on weekdays. Bargain hard!
