Macau Restaurants

Fernando’s
From the outside, this restaurant looks a bit like a hut overgrown with vines. Once inside though, the place extends out into a huge bungalow and an open-air bar. Although there is no air-conditioning, the beachfront location allows for a nice breeze, and ceiling fans are also constantly on to drive the heat out. The menu featurmacau restaurantes plenty of Mediterranean-style seafood and meat dishes, and the stewed clams in wine sauce and roasted chicken are impressive. Drinks are kept chilled in bottle coolers. Very popular with locals and Hong Kong day-trippers, expect this place to be packed at weekends.

Long Kei
Whether for dim sum or dinner, this old-style restaurant provides an authentic Chinese meal with a great atmosphere. Stepping through the curtained door may feel like stepping into the past, and at the weekends Cantonese operatic singing and community activities in the Largo do Senado below will seep through the thin walls and windows. Do not forget to try the stir-fried noodles or the noodles in soup. The hot tea is complimentary but all other drinks are chargeable. For weekend meals, especially dim sum, be sure to arrive early to ensure you get a seat.

A Lorcha
The green and white checked tablecloths and stewards running around in their penguin suits mark this spot out as a place for Western food–brace yourself though for a slightly different western flavour. It is not that the kitchen cannot cook, but that it cooks the modified version of common dishes, such as steak and fries or codfish, flavoured to suit Asian taste buds. The staff is great, so be sure to ask them for recommendations or daily specials.

Henri’s Galley
macau restaurant1A well-patronised restaurant in the centre of Macau, Henri’s has been cooking up some of the best dishes in the area for over twenty years. The interior is still in pretty good condition even after all these years of serving up quality food to eager customers. African chicken and Portuguese soups are the most popular dishes. The prawns are enormous, the fish dishes are excellent and meat-fiends will devour the steaks with great gusto. Not much for vegetarians except rather limp salads but the cook will conjure up something if you can explain exactly what you want.

O Porto Interior
One would not expect such an impressive outlet just opposite the Ma Kuo Temple bus terminus, or next door to a car repair workshop. Do not be fooled though, as government officials and celebrities often frequent this renowned outlet.

The two-floor restaurant with Anglo-Chinese decor has a crew of friendly staff and the food is great–Portuguese dishes prevail, so expect lots of meat, fish and chicken cooked in rich sauces and served with salads. Remember to bring your camera, as the warmth and comfort of your surroundings will no doubt prove photogenic.

Ristorante La Gondola
Located next to the sea on the southern tip of Coloane, this pleasant Italian restaurant has refreshing views of Cheoc Van Beach. The food is Tuscan and includes great salami, ham, oven-baked pizza, pastas galore and some top wines. If you just want a snack rather than a sit-down meal by candle-light, you can order a few side-dishes and then take them down to the water’s edge–how romantic.

Bolo de Arroz
Start your day with freshly baked breads and cakes. After all, you will need the energy if you are planning a hike around Coloane, a test drive around the Go Kart track or a day at the gaming tables. To get here, take the road that runs off Largo do Senado next to MacDonald’s. Bolo de Arroz is a small cafe along this street, a basic dining venue but one that is full of culinary surprises. The cappuccinos come highly recommended; the breads, cakes and sandwiches are well-made bakery delights. The tight-fisted will appreciate the prices.

Pinocchio
One of the most popular restaurants on Taipa, this place specialises in Macanese cuisine for the masses. The building is huge, as is the menu which is extensive. Apparently designed to cater to large groups of people, this eatery is also fine for a cosy rendezvous. The food is deftly prepared. The duck and curried crab both come highly recommended. Tasty is the keyword here.
4 Rua do Sol
Macau MacauThe name of this outlet came about because the owner likes to hang portraits of previous and current reigning Miss Macau’s on the wall. This all white-tiled outlet is moderate in size but a little slow in service. Be sure to ask for a refill of tea as the staff is not that conscientious at quenching your thirst. Look out for the showcase pantry kitchen at the front of the shop, because oddly enough it has not been used in a long while.

The popular Macau dishes include Bacalhau(dried codfish, a Portuguese favorite), African Chicken,Galinha Portuguesa, Linguado Macau, Paella and Clam Stir-fried with Garlic. Wine and good food brings out the best of each other and Portuguese wines are an excellent accompaniment to the delicious Macau cuisine.

The most famous egg tart in Macau should be the Cafe e Nata Margaret’s, which is located at Gum Loi Building, Rua Almirante Costa Cabral, Macau. It is just down a little alley one block from the Hotel Lisboa.
