Nanjing is the capital of
Jiangsu Province. It is situated on the vast plain of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It belongs to the northern subtropical monsoon climate zone where the four seasons are clearly demarcated, the annual mean temperature is 16°C, the annual even precipitation is 1,106 mm and the frost-free period is 237 days.At present, Nanjing has jurisdiction over 10 districts and 5 counties,covering an area of 6,516 square kilometers and having a population of about 5,200,000.
Nanjing means “southern capital”, Beijing “northern capital”. Nanjing was the capital of several dynasties and has various relics including Ming tombs that are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was the capital of the Republic of China from their 1911 revolution until the defeat by the communists in 1949.
History
Nanjing first became a capital in AD 229, where Sun Quan of the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period relocated its capital to Jianye , a city he extended on the basis of Jinling Yi in AD 211 .
The city was reconstructed during the late Tang Dynasty. It was again named capital (then known as Jinling during the short-lived Southern Tang Kingdom (937 – 975) (who renamed it Xidu), who succeeded the Wu Kingdom.
The first emperor of the Ming Dynasty Zhu Yuanzhang who overthrew the Yuan Dynasty rebuilt this city and made it the capital of China in 1368.During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Nanjing area was known as Jiangning and served as the seat of government for the Liangjiang Viceroy. Nanjing was the capital of the Taiping Kingdom[6] in the mid-19th century, being renamed as Tianjing .In 1937, the Japanese army invaded and occupied the Capital city of Republic of China – Nanjing, and carried out the systematic and brutal Nanking massacre.
On April 23, 1949, The People’s Liberation Army conquered Nanjing, officially ending the Republic of China’s rule on the mainland. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, Nanjing was initially a province-level municipality, but very soon became, and today remains, the provincial capital of Jiangsu.
Nanjing is divided into different districts and counties. The districts listed below are eleven urban districts and two counties:
Xuanwu District ,Baixia District ,Qinhuai District ,Jianye District ,Gulou District,Xiaguan District ,
Pukou District ,Luhe District ,(Formerly Luhe County) ,Qixia District ,Yuhuatai District ,Jiangning District (Formerly Jiangning County)
Counties:
Lishui County and Gaochun County .
