Approximately 185 kilometres from Baotou City, stands the beautiful Genghis Khan’s Mausoleum which was built in 1954. It is recognised as the gathering place to pay tribute and bid sacrifice to the spirit of the great Mongolian hero Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan also known as the ‘Khan of Khans’, was named so by Mongolian tribes referring to him as the ‘Powerful King’. During the latter part of the 12th century it was this great leader that unified Mongolian tribes. He was also the brave chief that challenged other empires to spread out his enormous Mongolian empire.
