Falling on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month(meet the 8th of June in 2008), the Dragon Boat Festival is one of the significant holiday celebrated in China and the one with the longest history. The origin of this summer festival is to commemorate Chu Yuan – an intelligent and patriotic poet living in the Warring States Period, who protested against corruption by drowning himself on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. On hearing of his death, people searched for his body by sailing their boats down the river, although they failed to rescue the poet, their efforts are still commemorated nowadays during the Festival by the Dragon Boat Races.
