On the southern outskirts of the city is Thousand Buddha Mountain (Qianfoshan), one of the country’s most sacred religious sites. It was called Mt. Li in ancient times. In the early days of Sui Dynasty many statues were chiseled into the rock, and it became known as Thousand Buddha Mountain. It is still the focus of religious festivals, although most of the statues have been lost to the ravages of time and the Cultural Revolution. If visiting in March or September, look out for the park’s temple fairs.
