Sanya lies between 18°09’34”—18°37’27” north latitude and 108°56’30”—109°48’28” east longitude, location on the southernmost of hainan island China, it covers an area of 1919.6sqkm with 91.6km long from east to west and 51km wide from south to north. The city is ringed by continuous and rugged mountains on three sides. These expansive mountains topography divides Sanya into many parts, all surrounded by green hills and characterized by multi-featured landscapes of many different styles.
Facing the South China Sea, there are a multitude of bays, each endowed with wonderful scenery. Beside the irresistible combination of a world-class beach—Yalong Bay, the Dadonghai, Xiaodonghai and Sanya bay in the urban area have the closest connection with the local citizens, while the Eastern and Western Islands serve as a gate to the South China Sea.
Its population is nearly 540,000, more than 20 nationalities. The main ethnic groups are the Han, Li, Miao and Hui peoples, with the Han being the majority. The minority Li, Miao and Hui peoples have their own customs and languages, but they also speak the national language of China, Mandarin.

Sanya is characterized with tropical oceanic monsoon climate, with yearly average temperature stays at 25.4°C., it has warm weather all year around, and no matter believe or not, 35.7°C. is the historical supreme temperature on record. The highest average temperature falls in July at 28.3°C while the lowest comes in Jan. at 20.3°C. the winter is very pleasant with no frost nor snow. Flowers are in full bloom throughout the year. Sanya thus is praised as the “oriental Hawaii “. The duration of sunshine is 2563 hours, with an annual rainfall of 1279mm in a year.

History
As early as in Qin Dynasty three counties were set under jurisdiction of the central government, Yazhou, or called Xiangjun was one of which. Han Dynasty established Zhuya County, Sui Dynasty set Linzhen and Tang Dynasty changed it to Zhenzhou for today’s Sanya. By Song Dynasty Sanya had become the southernmost country of China. As Sanya lies remote from the mainland and the central government, it has long been called＂the end of the earth＂since old times. The prime ministers Han Yuan and dignitary monk Jian Zhen of Tang Dynasty, the famous prime minister Zhao Ding, minister Hu Quan and the weaver Huang Daopo of Song Dynasty have all stepped feet in Sanya, who has made great contributions to the development of regional economy and cultural exchanges.

Yaxian County was liberated in April 1950,and the county government was established. In October 1954 the administration of CPC Yaxian Committee was relocated from Yacheng to Sanya. In 1958 Yaxian was relocated from Yacheng to Sanya. In 1958 Yaxian was emerged with Baoting, Lingshui, Niulou and Xinglong of wanning to become a big county, which were separated in 1959 and 1961 to set Baoting and Lingshui While Yaxian County remained its current prefecture. Approved by the State Council of China, Yaxian was upgraded to Sanya City on September 26,1987.On December 30 on the same year, Sanya City was officially named and performed accordingly.
