Zhengzhou is the capital of Henan Province, has jurisdiction over 6 districts, 5 county-level cities and 1
county, covers a total area of 7446.2 square kilometers and presently owns a total population of 6.977 million. The city proper of Zhengzhou has an area of 1062 square kilometers (of which, 137 square kilometers belongs to the developed urban area), a population of 3.22 million, and two national development zones.
Zhengzhou situated in the Central Plains, borders on the Yellow River in the north, and connects the Huang Huai Plains in the east and south. It is one of the oldest central cities in China, a hub of communications directly accessing 10 provinces, and a strategic place throughout the various dynasties.
Zhengzhou is in the region of 34°16′~34°58N and 112°42′~114°14′E, covering a total area of 7446.2 square kilometers .
Zhengzhou has a temperate semi-moisture continental monsoon climate ,cold in winter and hot in summer, centralized dryness and wetness, and warm in spring and cool in autumn with four clearly-defined seasons. An annual average temperature stands at 14.4 ‘, but highest temperature at an average of 27.3′ in July and coldest at an average -0.2′ in January. Annual rainfall stands at 640.9 mm, frost-free period 220 days, and annual sunshine time about 2400 hours.
History
It was an important metropolis during the Shang dynasty as early as 3500 years ago and became a capital during the five dynasties of Xia, Shang, Guan, Zheng, and Han, and a prefecture during the eight dynasties of Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties, Song, Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing. The long history and brilliant civilization have made Zhengzhou rich in humanistic scenery, where there are 137 key protective units at national or provincial levels, including 26 units with 28 items of national key protective units. Zhengzhou municipality consists of 6 districts and 5 sub-cities and 1 county, which are: Jinshui District, Erqi District, Zhongyuan District, Guancheng District, Mangshan District, Shangjie District, and Gongyi City, Dengfeng City, Xingyang City, Xinmi City, Xinzheng City and Zhongmou County.
